Carry On My Wayward Son - Kansas

Charlotte:

I'm officially less than 1 month away from the big Wedding! Yes, that explains the long silences here, but now that I've gotten a moment to breathe, I guess nothing is more appropriate than for me to start this exclusive series of posts on my big day.

Ladies and gentlemen, buckle up for the pilot post of: In Royal Matrimony.

To celebrate my departure from singlehood, my lovely bridesmaids threw me an amazing themed bachelorette's party last Saturday. If you know me well enough, you'd know that I'm big on parties, especially themed parties. I throw one every year on my birthday. This year I didn't, because I'm throwing a huge wedding party. Which will be awesome. :D

Naturally, before the planning started, my maid-of-honour had a very important question for me to answer:

"Eh. Can you give us a clue on which fandom you want for the theme. We know you got many fandoms la so. Better ask you."

Back then, I had just finished Final Fantasy XV, and Singapore had finally started receiving Opus I boxes and starter sets of the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game; to Boo's distress, there was literally nothing else I could think about.

"OMGGGG nuuuuuu. How do we even— o_o"

Luckily, like she had aptly commented, I DO have a lot of fandoms. Eventually, I suggested a Supernatural themed party, and it proved to be a very sound decision. For starters, the horror and supernatural genres are easily my favourite, and they're a breeze to emulate thematically, even if you don't have a lot of time to get deeply immersed in the show. It definitely is a bonus that Supernatural's lore, storylines and characters lend a lot of material for games, props and whatnot. Throwing an FF themed party without enough contextual knowledge, however, would really strain credulity.

In addition, Supernatural is one of my ultimate favourite TV shows, considering the fact that I've followed for close to 10 years now, and it's undoubtedly the ONLY TV series I've ever loved to the point of having the patience to stick with it through 12 seasons (okay, 11 seasons, cause I'm still catching up). I'm fortunate enough to even have an autographed photo of my favourite character.

Needless to say, in the hands of such creative and capable bridesmaids, the event was an absolute blast.

On the day of the party, we met for tea, and shortly after finishing our meal, I was blindfolded and whisked away to a mysterious location, and plunged into an escape-room-esque game.

The main aim of the game was to 'escape' with all three victims alive and haunt-free. Armed with a hunter's journal, the Colt and Ruby's knife, I worked tirelessly and relentlessly (ok no, not really, I was fucking clueless and I spent half the game in a thick cloud of confusion partly cause I was tired & disoriented) to complete 4 tasks as the storyline of the game unfolded before my eyes.

The tasks were:

1. Solve the Melanie Merchant haunting and rescue Victim A by finding the item that ties the vengeful spirit to the human world (the painting), and finding the items needed to destroy it (salt, lighter fluid, lighter).

2. Free Victim B, who has been kidnapped by Azazel (Yellow Eyed Demon) by summoning and tricking him into a Devil's Trap. Then, kill him with Ruby's knife after he frees Victim B.

3. Find out what is threatening to turn Victim C 'into one of hers' (Eve), and kill it with Phoenix Ash.

4. Make a deal with a crossroads demon to revive Victim B by finding the 'crossroads', and burying a box containing graveyard dirt, my photo, and bones from a black cat.

The main mechanics of the game were simple. I have to refer to the hunter's journal and the limited clues given by each victim to figure out what supernatural being had run amuck, then tell the game master what items I needed to vanquish each of them. Upon the game master's confirmation, I would then have to look around the apartment for the hunting materials, then proceed with whatever strategy was appropriate. If I could not find the items on my own, I would then have to refer to a task board that each of the victims had with them, and either do three tasks at random (dice roll) from the board, or roll the number 9 to get clues on where the items were.

Unfortunately, I seem to have more videos than photos, so I'll cut the clips into a mini-movie and upload it... someday. :')

Anyway, at this point, I really have to commend all my bridesmaids again. It wasn't a perfect run, but wow, the amount of effort put into the game with regards to the storyline, the props, the acting... it was really overwhelming. I'm really very impressed by the work done, especially since some of them also started watching a few episodes for inspiration and context.

I really, really appreciate the effort you guys :') Love you all <3

Love, C.
